Olathe news briefs for the week of Oct. 14

City Council
The Olathe City Council will next meet Tuesday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. Regular sessions are broadcast live on OGN (Comcast channel 7, AT&T channel 99 and on the City’s website). Olathe Public Library Volunteers Recognized
Last year alone, nearly 400 volunteers spent 10,540 hours serving at the two Olathe library locations, helping to continue providing a great customer experience.  On October 25th, the library is recognizing their dedication by hosting a volunteer dinner from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Parish Hall, 16000 W. 143rd Street.  Youth volunteer certificates and the annual Nancy Quinlisk Chandler Award will be presented.  Volunteer RSVPs will be accepted until October 21, and there are three ways to register.  Library volunteers can call (913) 971-6879, email rpatterson@olatheks.org, or register on-line on the events page at www.olathelibrary.org.

Dine Out for Olathe Kids on October 16
Residents are encouraged to dine out from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, when more than 20 Olathe restaurants will participate in the third annual “Dining Out for Kids” fundraiser to benefit the Olathe Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund.  Participating restaurants will donate 10 percent or more of their dinner proceeds to the Fund.  This year’s campaign goal is $110,000.

The 2013 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund will benefit 15 local charities serving Olathe children and families. They are:  Catholic Charities, Children’s Shoe Fund, Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Cypress Recovery, El Centro, Health Partnership Clinic of Johnson County, Johnson County Christmas Bureau, Johnson County Interfaith Hospitality Network, KidsTLC, Marillac Center, Mission Southside, Olathe Public Schools Foundation, Olathe Special Olympics, SAFEHOME, and the Salvation Army.

A complete list of restaurants participating in “Dining Out for Kids” is available on the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund website.  No flyer or coupon is necessary.

Trick or Treat Off the Street
Children and their families are invited to trick or treat at stations set up on the Mahaffie grounds while also enjoying fall farm activities and hayrack rides.  The event will be held 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 26.  Admission is $3 per person for ages 3 and up.  Registration is not required.

Businesses and organizations are invited to set up a candy station at the event. Mahaffie provides a table, two chairs, and a sign while your organization provides the station staffing and candy! Please call (913) 971-5111 to participate.

Tiger Cub Scout Day at Mahaffie
Mahaffie will host Tiger Cub Scout Day on Saturday, October 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tiger Cub Scouts can earn requirements for their Making My Family Special program as well as a special Mahaffie patch only offered during this program.  Program registration is $10 per scout and accompanying adults are admitted free.  Scouts should bring a sack lunch and a water bottle and dress for the weather.  To register, call (913) 971-5111 or email mahaffie@olatheks.org.  Payment is due the day of the event.

Cookout to Benefit United Way
Let library staff grill your lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on October 17 at the Olathe Public Library, 201 E. Park Street.  Menu items include hot dogs, chili dogs, brats, chili, nachos, chips, treats and sodas.  Wear your favorite school colors or Chiefs red to this outdoor tailgate to support United Way.
