Olathe sex store robber arrested after car chase into KCK

A man who allegedly robbed an Olathe sex shop at gunpoint Saturday, Nov. 30, was arrested in Knasas City, Kan., after hitting several vehicles during a high-speed 30-minute chase.

Olathe police said the man, wearing a gray hoodie, robbed Cirilla’s Adult Store at 1848 E. Santa Fe at 12:45 p.m. He then fled in a black Hyundai with temporary tags. Olathe police officer pursued the man and then the Kansas Highway Patrol’s chopper joined the chase at Interstate 435 and Midland Drive. Continue reading

No bargain is worth holiday shopping mania

When it comes to getting a good deal, well, I’m right there — at the head of the line if possible.

But you’ll never — NEVER — catch me pitching a tent on a concrete sidewalk next to a store front’s sliding glass doors days before the Black Friday sales begin, or in the case of this year for what now is being labeled Brown Thursday. Besides, it would be my luck I would end up not hearing the alarm clock, over-sleeping and then waking up to the sounds of people shuffling past the tent on their way into the store.

In my 63 years, I’ve taken part in two — just two — of what I have come to label as shopping hysteria calamity. The first one took place nearly 30 years ago at the Olathe Feeney’s Hallmark store. It was the big “sale” day after Christmas and wife Terri desperately wanted a Christmas tree ornament she was collecting that was to go on sale. Only she had to work.

JCCC volleyball team third at tourney

The Johnson County Community College volleyball team came away with a third place finish at the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament last weekend in Toledo, Ohio. It marks the fifth time since 2005 JCCC has finished among the top three nationally. JCCC won a national championship in 2005.

Johnson County began the tournament with a 3-0 win over Hagerstown, Community College and followed with a 3-1 win over Des Moines Area Community College later on opening day. In the semifinal round Nov. 22, the Lady Cavaliers fell in four sets to No. 2 seed Parkland College, but rebounded for a 3-1 win over Oakland Community College in the third place match on Nov. 23. Both libraries will close at 5 pm, November 27
& remain closed November 28 & 29.

The Olathe Public Library in downtown Olathe and its Indian Creek branch will close at 5 p.m. Nov. 27 and remain closed Nov. 28-29.
