Former Olathean killed in one-vehicle accident

Iva (Smith) Tomlinson, 63, Harveyville, Kan., and a 1968 graduate of Olathe High School, died in a one-car accident in Western Douglas County on U.S. 56 Highway Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16.

About 2:30 p.m., according to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the pickup truck in which Tomlinson was a passenger drifted too far to the side of the two-lane highway to avoid oncoming traffic that was too close to the center line. The truck’s wheels then dropped of the road and the truck slammed into a ditch, flew over an access culvert and flipped. Tomlinson died at the scene.

Tomlinson and the driver both were wearing seat belts; the driver was taken to KU Medical Center and treated for unknown injuries, according to the police report. The driver was not identified.

Tomlinson is the sister of former Olathe High School football coach and administrator Jim Smith.
