Olathe news briefs for the week of Dec. 23

City Council
The Olathe City Council will next meet Tuesday, January 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. Regular sessions are broadcast live on OGN (Comcast channel 7, AT&T channel 99 and on the City’s website). City Holiday Schedule
City of Olathe offices will close at noon on Tuesday, December 24 and remain closed on December 25 for the Christmas holiday. Monday and Tuesday trash recycling collection will occur on schedule. City offices will also be closed on January 1 for the New Year’s holiday. Monday and Tuesday trash and recycling collection will occur on schedule.

The remainder of the holiday week, collection will be delayed one day. For example, customers with a trash pick-up on Wednesday should have carts at the curb by 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Olathe Libraries Closed for the Holidays
The Olathe Public Library, 201 E. Park and the Indian Creek Branch, 12990 S. Black Bob Road, will be closed Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25.  Both locations will close at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31 and remain closed on Wednesday, January 1.

Holiday Hours for Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm
Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm will be closed Monday, December 23 through Thursday, December 26 in honor of the Christmas holiday. Mahaffie will resume regular hours Friday, December 27 through Sunday, December 29. Mahaffie will be closed Monday, December 30 through Friday, January 3 in honor of the New Year’s holiday and will begin winter hours on Saturday, January 4.

Winter Hours
Mahaffie Winter hours will run January to March. The site will be open Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4:00 p.m. Scheduled tours for the house and grounds will be offered Saturdays 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Sundays 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Other activities may include viewing exhibits in the Heritage Center, exploring children’s exhibits and viewing videos about the Mahaffie family and the Civil War. If there is snowfall of 10” or more, horse drawn sled rides may be offered. Visit Mahaffie.org or our Facebook page for updates about potential sled rides after a heavy snow.  Admission is $3/adults, $2/children ages 5-11; Olathe residents receive $1/off admission. Activities and admissions vary seasonally; visit Mahaffie.org or call (913) 971-5111 for the latest information. Mahaffie and Heritage Center office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree and Holiday Lights
Wondering what to do with your Christmas tree once the holidays are over? Consider recycling it! Olathe residents can place cut Christmas trees at the curb on collection day, or drop off trees at the City’s composting facility (127th and Hedge Lane), 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Please remove all plastic bags, ornaments, tinsel and lights.

Don’t toss those broken or unwanted holiday lights. Recycle them using the City of Olathe e-Waste Recycling Program. Any Johnson County resident can call Customer Service at 971-9311 to schedule an appointment to drop off electronic waste free of charge!
