After-school engineering program a blast for Manchester Park students

Fifteen students in third and fourth grade at Manchester Park Elementary School took part in the Blast Off: Engineering for Kids after-school program this spring. Students met weekly for 90 minutes for six weeks.

Fifteen students in third and fourth grade at Manchester Park Elementary School took part in the Blast Off: Engineering for Kids after-school program this spring. Students met weekly for 90 minutes for six weeks.

Blast Off: Engineering for Kids rose to meet the expectations of adults and students at Manchester Park Elementary School. The six-week after-school program was a blast for students, thanks to an extended learning grant from the Olathe Public Schools Foundation.

The grant enabled Manchester Park, Ridgeview and Walnut Grove elementary schools to involve 15 students in each building in a hands-on engineering project involving rockets. An engineer from Honeywell brought the Engineering for Kids kits, supplies and lesson plans needed for the three groups. Continue reading

Candace Hayes, a senior at Olathe Northwest High School, has been named a National Achievement Scholar.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announces names of about 800 outstanding African-American high school seniors who have been named scholars and are being awarded more than $2 million in scholarships, financed by grants from 30 corporate organizations, professional associations and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The competition for the scholarship program was established in 1964 to honor scholastically talented African-American youth and provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants annually.

Hayes, who plans to study medicine in college, is involved in debate, lacrosse and volunteering. She is a National Honor Society member, Raven Link Crew advisor, Student Council class representative and Leadership Olathe graduate.
