Culinary students place first at nationals

The Olathe Public Schools 21st Century Culinary Arts program, housed at Olathe North High School, placed first in the nation at the National ProStart Invitational in Anaheim, Calif. The team placed first at the Kansas ProStart Invitational in March. The Management Team also placed first at state and competed in the national event.

This was the 10th year in a row that the Culinary Arts program has had students qualify for nationals. Culinary Arts placed first in 2010 and 2012. The team placed second last year.

The team dedicated hundreds of hours of practice after school from January through April. The Culinary team members are: Melinda Hrdy and Michael Miller, Olathe South High School; Ashleigh Hagen, Olathe North; Rachel Cormeny, Olathe East High School; and Haneen Ibrahim, Blue Valley North High School.

The Culinary students are led by Chef Mike Chrostowski and the Management students are led by Chef Phil Shaw.
