Fire Safety House at Brougham Elementary May 16

photo 1In an effort to help make families safer, the “Fire Safety House” brings safety information to second grade elementary students in more than 30 Olathe schools each year. The Fire Safety House is basically a “hands on” learning house on wheels.

photo 2Inside the house, children hunt for home hazards in a kitchen and living room; and, practice a fire escape from the bedroom. Firefighters use theater smoke, in the bedroom, to safely simulate the conditions of a real fire while children get low and crawl to their best exit. In this case, the door is warm and the children must use their second exit, which is a window with a short ladder at the back of the safety house.

Members of the media can see the Olathe Fire Department’s Fire Safety House in action at Brougham Elementary School, 15500 S. Brougham Drive, Olathe, at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 14.
