Public invited to MNU Prayer Walk Aug. 27

MidAmerica Nazarene Universtiy Associated Student Government invites members of the Olathe and surrounding community to join students, faculty and staff in Pioneer Prayer Walk, an evening of focused prayer. This annual event welcomes area churches, alumni, and friends of the university as they join the campus community to walk the boundaries of the campus praying for God’s guidance, protection and blessings for all aspects of the new academic year. Additionally, this year, prayer for Impact Southern Johnson County will be held.

Join the event at the Harvest Prayer Statue on the campus mall (green area in middle of MNU campus) at 7:30 p.m. Participants will walk through the campus stopping to pray periodically; the event concludes at College Church of the Nazarene’s sanctuary for a closing time of prayer. Those unable to participate in the walk itself are invited to gather in the College Church sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. to pray and to participate in closing prayers.

Prayer walking was common in the early church as a way for Christians to gather to reaffirm their commitment to God’s purposes and to focus on all segments of their community. Often congregations would circle their towns and ask God to be present in the city and in the lives of the people. This practice was suggested in Genesis 14:17 when the Lord said to Abraham, “’Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.’ Then Abraham departed, walked the land and built an altar to the Lord.”

MNU President David Spittal says the prayer walk is a student-led event that provides an opportunity for community members, alumni, and other friends of the university to join the campus community for this evening of prayer.

“We’re especially delighted to partner this year with the Olathe Pastors Network, churches of Johnson County, Youth With a Mission, and Impact World Tour, in sharing the love of Jesus Christ through Impact Southern Johnson County,” he says. “We are praying for a mighty outpouring of God’s spirit within Southern Johnson County and beyond.”
