Olathe news briefs for the week of Aug. 24

City Council

The Olathe City Council will meet Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. Regular sessions are broadcast live on OGN (Comcast channel 7, AT&T channel 99 and on the City’s website).  For a recap of the previous Council meeting, visit the City Clerk’s webpage. The City Council is expected to vote on the proposed 2016 budget, 2016-2020 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), and 2016-2017 fee resolution.

City Council adopts 2016 budget, CIP and Fee Resolution

The City of Olathe recently completed its first two-year budget process.  On Tuesday, Aug. 18, the City Council formally adopted the 2016 budget and conditionally approved the 2017 budget.  The 2016-2020 Capital Improvement Program and 2016-2017 Fee Resolution were also approved.  For more information visit OlatheKS.org/Finance/Budget/BudPlan .

West Drop-off Recycling Center at K-7 Walmart closed until further notice

The City’s West Drop-off Recycling Center, located next to Wal-Mart at 395 N. K-7 Hwy, is closed until a new location can be identified. The Ripple Glass bin has also been removed. Residents can drop off recyclable items, including glass, at two other drop-off locations:

•  Downtown Olathe Drop-off Recycling Center: Near Kansas Ave. and Poplar St., in the NW parking lot

•  East Olathe Drop-off Recycling Center: Near 135th St. and Black Bob Rd. at 13600 S. Alden St., in the parking lot of the east Walmart

I-35 at the I-435 interchange closed late Friday, Aug. 28 to early Monday, Aug. 31

The Kansas Department of Transportation will close northbound and southbound I-35 at the I-435 interchange starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, re-opening at 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 31. This is to accommodate work for the Johnson County Gateway project. Northbound I-35 traffic will encounter all lanes closed from the left, one by one approaching I-435, and ultimately will be forced onto the ramp to eastbound I-435. Southbound I-35 traffic will encounter two lanes closed from the left, prior to the southbound U.S. 69 exit. Microchip and rabies vaccination clinic Saturday, Aug. 29

The City of Olathe will offer a Microchip and Low-cost Rabies Clinic on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Olathe Animal Shelter, 505 E. Sunvale Drive, located behind the Olathe Police Department.

Olathe residents can obtain rabies vaccinations and purchase/renew City of Olathe animal licenses at the same time. Microchips cost $25 and one-year rabies vaccinations cost $10. Additional immunizations including distemper, bordetella, etc. will be available at a reduced rate. The animal shelter accepts cash or check. Competition heats up at the Olathe Farmers’ Market
From five teams to three, chefs from the Olathe Public Schools Culinary Arts program will compete for scholarships in the final round of the COUNTRY Financial Chef Challenge at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Olathe Community Center Farmers’ Market location.

Students from the school district’s Les Arts Culinaires will create original dishes using ingredients from the market. A panel of local celebrity judges, including kid chef Zach Hofen, who appeared on the Rachel Ray Kids Cook-Off on Food Network, will determine the 2015 market champions.

The final round is sponsored by COUNTRY Financial and Google fiber.

Community Award winners will be recognized at the 12th Annual Community and Accessible Community Awards Reception and Program on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Olathe Community Center. The awards and program are sponsored by the Olathe Human Relations Commission and the Persons with Disabilities Advisory Board.

Too Cool to Drool Tuesday, Sept. 8

Bring your dog(s) for some fun swim time at Black Bob Bay from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

  • Dogs 25 pounds or less swim from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
  • Dogs of all sizes swim from 7p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission is $10. Registration is available online at Too Cool To Drool; the first 75 dogs will enjoy a goodie bag.

Wild West Obstacle 5K Saturday, Sept. 26

Stagecoach Park is getting wild on Saturday, Sept. 26 with a new Wild West Obstacle 5K run. Runners will take on the “Wild West” with fun obstacles placed throughout the 5K course. Registration is $35 for the race or $42 for the race, omelet breakfast, and entry to Mahaffie’s Wild West Days. Register online or call 971-8563 with code 10937.

Olathe Charities 5K Saturday, Oct. 10

The City of Olathe will hold the inaugural Olathe Charity 5K on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Frontier Park, benefitting local charities.

Olathe Charities 5K is now accepting applications from local charities looking for a fun and easy fundraiser. Selected organizations receive $20 per runner who designate that they are running on behalf of the charity. Organizations with 501c3 status are encouraged to learn more and fill out the online application form.

Runners can register online or call 913-971-8563 with code 11355. Discount registration is $40 through Saturday, Sept. 26, $45 from Sunday, Sept. 27 to Friday, Oct. 9, and $50 the day of the race.

Registration Open for Fall Fun on the Farm Home School Day

Registration is now open for Fall Fun on the Farm Home School Day on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015. The program offers two sessions of 1860s Fall Living History activities featuring Mahaffie House tours, cookstove and blacksmith demonstrations, and Agricultural Heritage Livestock Barn visits. Sessions are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $5/student and accompanying adults are free ($2/adult stagecoach ride). Mahaffie recognizes Grandparents Day with free admission

Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm will recognize national Grandparent’s Day on Sunday, Sept. 13 with free admission for grandparents with an accompanying paid child admission.  This is a $7 savings.  In addition to regular weekend programming, grandparents can pick up a copy of a family tree to fill out with their family.  Registration is not required for this event.

Visitors are invited to participate in living history activities including riding the stagecoach, cooking on the wood-burning cookstove, touring the historic Mahaffie house, blacksmithing, farming chores, and more. 

Fall Cemetery Tour tickets on sale

Tickets for the popular Fall Cemetery Tour are now available for purchase. The Historic Cemetery Tour offers a chance to learn more about the historic Olathe Cemetery from Mahaffie staff and volunteers portraying historic figures. This year’s tour theme is All About the Mahaffies in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Mahaffie House. Fall Cemetery Tour dates are Thursday, Oct. 8, Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10. Thursday and Friday evening tour times are 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening Tour times are 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.. Tickets are required for $6/person ages 5 and up.  Tickets can be purchased at the Heritage Center Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. or by calling (913) 971-5111.

Olathe Libraries closed for Labor Day

The Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park, and Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd will be closed Sunday, Sept. 6 and Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Olathe Public Library’s 2014 Annual Report

The Olathe Public Library’s 2014 Annual Report is now available online. The report features 2014 statistics and accomplishments.
