City Council

The Olathe City Council will meet Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. Veterans Day Schedule
City of Olathe offices, including Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop, will close on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in recognition of Veterans Day.  Trash and recycling collection remain on schedule.

Olathe Community Center honors military personnel on Veterans Day

The Olathe Community Center will recognize active duty military and veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 11 with free admission to the Olathe Community Center. Simply bring your military id and enjoy your day at the Olathe Community Center, 1205 E. Kansas City Rd.

Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event Saturday, Nov. 14
All Johnson County residents will have the opportunity to drop off Household Hazardous Waste at the City of Olathe’s drop-off event on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the HHW facility, 1420 S. Robinson Dr., behind Public Works and Customer Service. No appointment will be necessary. Residents can also schedule an HHW drop-off appointment online. Go to OlatheKS.org/HHW and click the Book Now button to schedule a time that’s convenient for you.

Kick-off the holiday season with the Dorr Family Light Show

The Dorr Family Light Show, will feature more than 40,000 lights and 16 million color combinations, at Stagecoach Park, 1205 E. Kansas City Rd. The festive drive-up show will be filled with animation, elves and music played through your vehicle radio. The 2015 show will debut Thanksgiving night and will run through New Year’s Eve. Enjoy the display Monday -Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday – Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Donations benefitting the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund will be accepted.

Save the Date for WinterFest 2015

Start the winter season with a visit to Santa’s Wonderland on Friday, Dec. 4, beginning at 5:15 p.m. at the Olathe Community Center, 1205 E. Kansas City Rd. The WinterFest schedule includes:

  • 5:15 p.m. – Visit with Santa, view Olathe Public School choir performances, enjoy free activities, face painting, and booths featuring the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund recipients.
  • 6:45 p.m. – Join Mayor Michael Copeland and special guest, Fox 4 Meteorologist Joe Lauria to light the Olathe Mayor’s Christmas Tree.
  • 7:15 p.m. – Watch “Elf” in the Olathe Community Center gym. Bring blankets only please.

Free park and ride service will be available from Olathe North High School, 600 E Prairie.

Winter Farmers’ Market coming to Olathe

A new farmers’ market will open at the Olathe Community Center, 1205 E. Kansas City Rd, on Saturday, Dec. 5. Each date will feature eight vendors selling a variety of items including farm fresh eggs, honey, homemade goods and more. The 2015/16 market dates will be:

  • Dec. 5 and 19
  • Jan. 9 and 23
  • Feb. 6 and 20
  • March 12 and 26

Winterize your irrigation system
Colder temperatures are upon us. Remember to have your irrigation system winterized and backflow preventer shut off, drained, and/or removed for the winter to prevent freezing and breaking. Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm opens Thanksgiving weekend
Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, November 26. Mahaffie will be open on Friday, Nov. 27, from noon to 4 p.m. for visitors to enjoy1860s living history activities including blacksmith and cookstove demonstrations, exhibits in the Heritage Center and the Agricultural Heritage Livestock Barn, and stagecoach rides, weather and ground conditions permitting. Admission is $7/adults and $4/children ages 5-11. Olathe residents receive $1/off admission. Plus, those unique gifts and stocking stuffers, including new farm and animal-related toys are located inside the Heritage Center at the Mahaffie Market. Breakfast with Santa

Enjoy Breakfast with Santa in the holiday decorated Heritage Center on Saturday, Nov. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Activities will include making a craft, listening to Christmas Carols by the Carolers of Note, and sitting for a family photo with Santa! Cost is $8/person ages 3 and up. Admission will include visiting the grounds and Mahaffie House. Registration is required. Visit Mahaffie.org to register and view event details.

Make holiday memories at Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop Christmas Open House

Start your Christmas season with a visit to Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop’s Christmas Open House on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Visitors can decorate a graham cracker gingerbread house ($4 each), make Christmas crafts, and ride the stagecoach (weather and grounds permitting; $3 each, ages 3 and up). Santa will be in the Heritage Center to hear children’s Christmas wishes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Santa’s photographer will be available to take photos of visitors with Santa ($5 each).

Entertainment in the Heritage Center will include music by the Shady Grove String Band from 10 a.m. to noon. The performance will include audience participation for all ages. The Carolers of Note will sing Christmas Carols from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  While there, visitors can stop by Mrs. Mahaffie’s kitchen to see what’s cooking and assist with winter farm chores.  Plus, those unique gifts and stocking stuffers, including new farm and animal-related toys are located inside the Heritage Center at the Mahaffie Market.
