Foster a pet this holiday season
The Olathe Animal Shelter is looking to place pets this holiday season as part of the National “Home for the Holidays” pet fostering program. Across the country, over 13,000 pet rescue organizations are encouraging pet adoption by allowing residents to foster an animal during the holidays in hopes of giving the pet a permanent home.

The program is open to Olathe residents only.  Residents can begin to select pets on Wednesday, Dec. 16.  Those who wish to do so will be allowed to return the animal to the shelter on Monday, Dec. 28. Certain restrictions will apply. Contact the shelter for further details.

Animals can be viewed at the Olathe Animal Shelter, 505 E. Sunvale Road, or on the website at OlatheKS.org/Police/AnimalControl. Regular operating hours at the shelter are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The goal of the Home for the Holidays program is to place pets in a permanent home during beyond the holiday season. Last year’s program achieved a 100% adoption rate. This year, the first 10 people who sign up for the program will also receive a homemade quilt.

Olathe residents interested in making this Christmas a happy holiday for a pet in need can contact shelter staff at 913-971-6362 for more information.

Reduce waste during the holidays

Household waste increases more than 25 percent during the holidays. Reduce, reuse and recycle your way to a greener holiday season with these tips:

·       Wrap gifts in newspaper, used gift wrap, or reusable gift bags. Most gift wrap is not recyclable.

·       Send eCards or recycle cards from past holidays.

·       Buy cards made from recycled materials.

·       Buy rechargeable batteries for toys and electronic gifts to keep batteries out of the landfill and save you money.

·       Flatten extra boxes. All cardboard can be recycled at the curb.

·       Turn off holiday lights during the day and at bedtime to save energy and help your lights last longer.

·       Recycle your wreath and tree (without ornaments, lights or tree stand) at the curb or take to the composting facility.

For a complete list of acceptable recycling items, visit OlatheKS.org/OMS/Recycling. Or, for a handy mobile reference, download the free Olathe Trash Day mobile app, available in the App Store and Google Play.
