City Council

The Olathe City Council will meet Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. Mahaffie 150th Gala Saturday, Feb. 20

The Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Foundation invites the public to celebrate 150 years at the Mahaffie House on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a special 150th Gala. Tickets are $75/person, $600 for a table of eight, and sponsorships are available. Ticket sales are limited to the first 150 registrants. Purchase your tickets at Mahaffie.org or call 913-971-5111. All proceeds will go to the preservation of the Mahaffie House. Attire will be semi-formal or 19th century formal wear.

  • Enjoy dinner in the Heritage Center, inspired by 19th Century cuisine: bison, turkey, seasonal vegetables, soup, salad and dessert catered by the Sunflower Café. A commemorative wine glass will be included with the meal.
  • A 19th Century fireworks display in honor of General Washington will begin at 7 p.m. Featured displays will include a cannon tribute to Washington.
  • After fireworks, participants will enjoy 19th Century social dancing with music from the Gum Springs Serenaders. A caller will assist guests during the dance.

Daddy Daughter Ball registration

Dads, dust off your dancing shoes and get ready for a night of memories with your daughter. The annual Daddy Daughter Ball is Friday, Feb.5 at the Olathe Community Center. This popular event includes food, games, pictures, and more. Register online, by phone at 913-971-8563, or at the Olathe Community Center. Space is limited. The 2016 Daddy Daughter Ball is sponsored by Hy-Vee on 151st St. and Olathe Parks & Recreation.

Community Garden Workshop

Join the Olathe Community Garden Partnership for the annual winter Community Garden Workshop from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan 23. The morning event will feature speakers from around the region who will discuss growing fruits and vegetables successfully at home. The $5 registration fee includes a free soil test the day of the conference. Register online, by phone at 913-971-8563, or in person at the Olathe Community Center.

The workshop is presented by the Olathe Community Garden Partnership, an alliance committed to introducing the Olathe community to the wide-variety of personal and communal gardening opportunities throughout the city.  The partnership includes the City of Olathe, Olathe Medical Center, K-State Extension, K-State Olathe, the Olathe Community Garden Committee, and members of the faith community.

Meadow Lane Trail public meeting Thursday, Feb. 3
The City of Olathe will hold a final public meeting to discuss the Meadow Lane Trail at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3 at Meadow Lane Elementary, 21880 College Blvd. The meeting will allow residents to provide their input on the layout and design of Meadow Lane Trail.  The trail will run from Stratton Oaks subdivision to Ridgeview Road, connecting with the Johnson County Gary Haller Trail.

Teddy Bear Tea Sunday, Feb. 7

Dress in your best and bring your favorite doll or stuffed animal to enjoy tea, refreshments, and activities at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm’s Teddy Bear Tea.  The event will be held Sunday, Feb. 7 with sessions from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Each session is limited to 125 participants.  All activities will be held inside the Heritage Center, 1200 Kansas City Rd. Admission is $5 per participant for both youth and adults.  To register, visit Mahaffie.org or call 913-971-5111 by Friday, Feb. 5.  Youth must be accompanied by an adult.

Enjoy these upcoming events at the Olathe Public Library:

  • BRRR! It’s Cold Out There – Preschool Crafts on Thursday, Jan. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park St.
  • Book Munch for Lunch Bunch on Wednesday, Jan. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Sunflower Café, lower level of the Johnson County Admin. Building, 111 S. Cherry St.  Drop-in for this informal lunch gathering to discuss books. Bring your own lunch or purchase one at the café.  Registration is not required.
  • Young Adult Anime Club on Thursday, Jan. 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd.  Teens in grades 6-12 can watch anime, share manga drawings, and learn more about Japanese culture.  Refreshments will be served. Registration is not required.
  • Book Munch After Hours on Thursday, Jan. 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Perkins Restaurant, 1828 E. Santa Fe St. Join this informal group get-together to talk about books over dinner.  Purchase off of the menu or just come and enjoy the discussion. Registration is not required.
  • Homeschool Program: LEGO® Club on Tuesday, Feb. 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd.  Each month, homeschoolers ages 5 to 11 will receive a theme, and then build with bricks provided by the library.  Registration begins Monday, Jan. 25 at OlatheLibrary.org or by phone at 913-971-6874.
  • MLK Jr. Food Drive to Benefit Harvesters until Saturday, Feb. 20 during operating hours at the Olathe Downtown Library, 201 E. Park St., and the Olathe Indian Creek Library, 12990 S. Black Bob Rd.  Harvesters will have collection bins available to receive non-perishable items.  If you are unable to drop off items, monetary donations are accepted at http://olathepubliclibrary.harvestersvfd.org
