Around 9:20 a.m. on Monday, March 7, a passerby stopped and alerted a woman to a fire on her home’s wooden deck at 15435 W. 150th Ter. When firefighters arrived, they quickly extinguished the fire before it could spread to the home.
An investigator said discarded smoking materials was the cause of the fire.
This was the second deck fire of the day caused by discarded smoking materials. These two separate fires occurred only 67 minutes apart. No injuries were reported and damage is considered minor.
Captain Mike Hall said, “Especially in these dry and windy conditions, use extra caution if you choose to smoke.”
Before you discard smoking materials, make sure they are out. Dousing smoking materials in water or sand is the best way to do that, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
