Hermine “Erma” Grotenhuis, 107, of Gardner, KS passed away October 10, 2016 at Vintage Park of Gardner, where she had been a resident since 2001.
Graveside service will be 10:00 am Friday, October 14, 2016 at Gardner Cemetery, Gardner, KS. There will be an 11:00 am memorial service at Vintage Park, 869 Juniper Terr., Gardner, following the graveside service. Memorial Contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS, 913-856-7111. Erma will lie in state from 9 am – 5 pm Thursday, October 13th, at the funeral home.

Erma was born January 17, 1909 in Apeldoorn, Holland to Arnold Egbert and Johanna (Bunte) Loois. She grew up in Holland. At age 15, she immigrated to the United States on the ship “Rotterdam”. The family first settled in Hospers, IA but soon moved to Hollandale, MN where they farmed potatoes. She graduated from Hollandale High School. Erma met and married John Grotenhuis on January 12, 1927 in Hollandale. Both families moved to Independence, KS. With the help of their family farm, and the food they grew, they weathered the Great Depression. She ran a dairy with her husband and delivered the milk to customers including the local hospital and grocery stores. The farm was sold in 1970. They later moved to Gardner. Erma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Gardner. She volunteered for Mercy Hospital in Independence, KS, and did taxes for the elderly. She was a member of the 58 Grange Sewing Circle. Erma was an avid reader. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 1983 and daughter Iris Jean Riggs. She is survived by her children: Arnold E. and Joyce Grotenhuis of Independence, MO, Joan C. and John Cramer of Covington, LA and John H. and Judy Grotenhuis of Locust Dale, VA; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-great-grandchild.
