Freda N. Whitaker, 81, a long-time resident of Olathe, Kans., currently living in Overland Park, died Thursday, July 21, 2016, after suffering a heart attack. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Whitaker, who died in 2008.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kan.; funeral services will be there Thursday at 10 a.m. Contributions to the American Heart Association.
Freda was born Jan. 5, 1935, in Altamont, Kan. She attended Pittsburgh State University where she met her husband of 54 years. She left college to start her family, ultimately graduating from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1987.
In her early career, Freda worked as a secretary at Olathe businesses, including Sunflower Industries and the law office of John W. Breyfogle Jr. She began a career in banking at Patrons Bank and worked her way up the ranks from secretary to trust officer. She was a vice president in the trust department at Johnson County National Bank, finally retiring as as executive vice president from Midwest Trust Co., which she helped found.
She and Rex moved to Bella Vista, Ark., where she lived several years before moving back to Johnson County about four years ago after his death. She volunteered as a guide at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark., and was active in P.E.O. and Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was an avid gardener and loved quilting, beading and traveling.
She is survived by her son, David Whitaker, daughter, Barbara Whitaker, son-in-law, Rick Lyman and two granddaughters, Katherine and Laura Lyman.
