Mary Alice Smith


Mary A. Smith, 88, of Olathe, Kansas passed away at Olathe Medical Center on October 9, 2015.

She was born on October 6, 1927 in Leavenworth, Kansas, to her parents, Glen and Virginia Erma Struth and lived in Olathe since 1947. She was employed in the Johnson County office of the Kansas City Star from 1962 until she retired in 1978. Mrs. Smith was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in America, Olathe, Kansas. She was a longtime member of the volunteers now named Ambassadors of the Olathe Medical Center and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1997. She was honored in Ingram’s Magazine, Kansas City’s business magazine as a “Hero in Healthcare for 2009.”

She was a Past Queen of El Maat Temple, Daughters of the Nile, Kansas City/Overland Park, Kansas, Past President of Kansas City, Kansas and Lawrence Assemblies of the Social Order of the Beauceant, Past Worthy High Priestess of Madonna Shrine of Kansas City, Kansas and Fidelity Shrine of Lawrence and Past President of the Kansas State White Shrine Club. She was a member of the Olathe Intergenerational Chorus for many years where she sang, tap danced and played the trumpet. For 16 years, she showed her unique hats at organizational and private shows in Kansas and Missouri.

Preceding her in death were her parents and four brothers, Tom C. Struth, Victor C. Bachtel, Donald E. Bachtel and Dana D. Struth.

She leaves her husband of 71 years, Oscar D. Smith; three sons, Joseph Dell Smith and wife Bonnie of Augusta, Kansas, Terry Lee Smith and wife Petra Delgado of Los Cocos, Mexico and Keith Irwin Smith and wife Debbie of Bavaria, Kansas; a brother, Robert G. Struth and wife Ronna of Derby, Kansas; six grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

Mary will be cremated according to her wishes. A memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14 at New Hope Presbyterian Church, 13310 S. Black Bob Road, Olathe, Kansas 66062. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

A private inurnment will take place at a later date in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Olathe, Kansas. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to PCA Church, 13310 S.
