Nine Olathe teachers are semifinalists for statewide awards

A district committee has chosen nine highly qualified educators as semifinalists in two statewide award programs. The educators are being considered as district nominees for the 2014 Kansas Teacher of the Year Award and the 2015 Emporia State University Master Teacher Award.

Elementary Kansas Teacher of the Year semifinalists: Lyndsay Cast, fifth-grade teacher at Bentwood Elementary School; Gayla Posch, fourth-grade teacher at Tomahawk Elementary School; and Betsy Prestridge, fourth-grade teacher at Countryside Elementary School. Continue reading

Olathe Briarwood school bake sale June 2 to benefit Moore (Okla.) Briarwood school

Briarwood Elementary School’s Girl Scout Troop will be hosting a bake sale at the school (14101 S. Brougham Drive) from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 2.

The proceed will go to the families of Briarwood Elementary School in Moore, Okla., who were affected by the tornado that destroyed their school on Monday, May 20.


School bond issue will solve some critical issues, including safety

There are six critical and undeniable issues Olathe School Board president Amy Martin knows are facing students, staff and patrons of the Olathe Public Schools:

1. Olathe is going to need a fifth high school;

2. Olathe is going to need a 36th elementary school;

3. Olathe schools need to be made safer;

4. Outdated technology equipment need to be replaced and updated;

5. Many of Olathe’s schools are old and need to be updated; and

6. To accomplish those things, and more, the Olathe Public Schools will need to get the permission of patrons in the form of a $244.8 million bond issue on June 11.
