County Christmas Bureau set for Dec. 6 opening at Great Mall

The Johnson County Christmas Bureau opens the doors to its annual Holiday Shop beginning Friday Dec. 6 through Saturday Dec. 14 in the donated space of the former Marshall’s, Great Mall of the Great Plains, 20090 W. 151st St in Olathe, Kan.

By appointment, more than 13,000 low-income Johnson County residents will select groceries, personal care items and household supplies, children’s clothing, gifts and toys, books, winter coats plus hats and gloves that will provide sustenance and warmth for the holidays and the new year.

JCCB’s goal this year is to serve 13,000 individuals from 3,600 families plus 700 nursing home residents.  120 donation barrels are located throughout Johnson County and are available for donations from the public to help stock the Holiday Shop.  Visit for a list of sites.

Fireworks in Olathe illegal; city fireworks display at Great Mall July 4

Fireworks caused 197 reported fireworks-related injuries in Kansas in 2012, according to the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Some sparklers, a holiday favorite, may burn at temperatures of up to 1800º Fahrenheit, which is as hot as volcano lava.

In an effort to keep people safe, the possession, sale or use of fireworks in Olathe is prohibited. Continue reading
