The Olathe City Council will meet Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall for a regular session. The Olathe City Council will consider adopting the 2017 conditionally approved budget at the Aug. 16 Council meeting. The City of Olathe operates under a two-year budget term, which allows for better long-range planning and enhanced program analysis. The 2017 budget focuses on strategic investments that support the resident priority areas of public safety, transportation, and infrastructure maintenance. City of Olathe hosts annual fireworks show

The City of Olathe will host its annual fireworks show on Saturday, July 4, at the Great Mall of the Great Plains, 20700 W. 151st Street. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to find parking and set-up a viewing spot.

Olathe news briefs for the week of May 28

Celebrate Olathe – Summer Fling Friday, June 26

Celebrate Olathe on Friday, June 26, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Olathe Community Center at Stagecoach Park. The evening will be filled with family-friendly activities, fall program previews, and great music. The Summer Concert Series moves to Stagecoach Park for this night featuring Trout Fishing in America, Craig Toungate, Willis Alan Ramsey, and Alison Rogers. Free parking will be available at Olathe North High School and shuttle service will run throughout the evening. Food will be available for purchase. Visit Celebrate Olathe for more information.

Sport court construction begins         

Tennis courts at Mill Creek Park and basketball courts at Fairview Park are under construction. The courts will be unavailable for use over the next several weeks as new surfaces are installed. Visit Pardon our Progress for more information.

Memorial Day closures

City of Olathe offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, for the Memorial Day Holiday.  Trash and recycling collection will remain on schedule.

The Olathe Downtown Library (201 E. Park Street) and the Olathe Indian Creek Library (12990 S. Black Bob Road) will be closed Sunday, May 24 and Monday, May 25. Continue reading

Free Olathe Kids Fishing Derby registration now underway

Registration now is underway for the 34th Annual Olathe Kids Free Fishing Derby scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 20, at Cedar Lake Park, located south of 151st Street at 15500 Lone Elm Road in southwest Olathe.

This is a free event with free giveaways that include worms, hooks, bobbers and T-shirts (while supplies last) for youngsters ages 3 to 15 and for seniors 60 and older for the first 700 registered participants that check in the day of the Derby. There also is a free hotdog lunch with chips and drink for the entire family from 11 to noon followed by trophy presentations. Water will be provided by Olathe’s Bass Pro during the Derby.
