JCCC volleyball team third at tourney

The Johnson County Community College volleyball team came away with a third place finish at the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Tournament last weekend in Toledo, Ohio. It marks the fifth time since 2005 JCCC has finished among the top three nationally. JCCC won a national championship in 2005.

Johnson County began the tournament with a 3-0 win over Hagerstown, Community College and followed with a 3-1 win over Des Moines Area Community College later on opening day. In the semifinal round Nov. 22, the Lady Cavaliers fell in four sets to No. 2 seed Parkland College, but rebounded for a 3-1 win over Oakland Community College in the third place match on Nov. 23. OP shooting victim identified

Overland Park police identified the man killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday as Raymon K. Thomas.

The shooting took place about 3:30 Sunday afternoon in the driveway of Thomas’ home in the 6300 block of W 94th Terrace. According to police, two men drove onto the block just west of Lamar and one man got out of the car. As Thomas, said to be in his 30s, walked toward a car in his driveway he was shot several times, police said. Neighbors told police they heard about 12 shots fired.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspects were last seen driving west on 94th Terrace towards Metcalf Avenue in a newer model red or maroon Ford Taurus with Missouri plates.

There are two suspects in this incident. Both are described as heavy set black males. The shooter was described as having very short hair or a shaved head, wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

“Obviously, it was a targeted shooting,” said Gary Mason of Overland Park police. “We knew that right away.”

Neighbors said Thomas, a father of three, had been working as a real estate agent.

Drive-by shooting in OP

Overland Park police reported that a drive-by shooting occurred Sunday afternoon near Lamar Avenue and West 94th Terrace but would not release any further information.

But according to neighbors and media reports, one person had died at the scene and a car’s windshield on 94th Terrace appeared to have several bullet holes.

Neighbors said they head about a dozen shots and that the victim was able to get out of the car before collapsing between two houses.
