Trip to DMV surprisingly easy and pleasant — for me

I’m back!

It’s done!

Three vehicle registrations renewed and it took less than 20 minutes.

No line. No waiting.

But only because I went to the DMV’s website to reserve my spot in line clicking on it at 7:30 a.m. After entering my cell phone number, I immediately received a text saying my wait time was 4 minutes (by 8 a.m. the wait time was 312 minutes or 5 hours and 12 minutes). I live about 5 minutes away from the DMV (depending on the traffic). When I arrived the parking lot was filled, a line of probably 100-plus people stretched out the door and a police officer was at the door to keep order and allow people who had called ahead to go inside. The dreaded DMV

I’ve been dreading today all weekend.

I have to go to the DMV in Olathe to renew our vehicle registrations.

It’s my own fault. I could have mailed them in but with granddaughter Alexandra in town, I forgot and missed the mail-in date deadline.

I wanted to do it online and use my credit card and would have but each vehicle needs a pin number in order to do that. And as luck would have it, just two of our three vehicles have that pin number. And when you use a credit card, you pay a “convience” fee for each vehicle as well as a processing fee. So I figured since I had to go to the DMV to renew the registration on the un-pinned vehicle I might as well save the extra fee money and take care of all three at once today.

Last year, it wasn’t a bad experience. But since the state went to a new computer system that was supposed to make it even better, well, the waiting time has become worse — a lot, lot worse — to the point that they turn people away.

So, we’ll see how it goes. I’ll try to secure a time via the website. I’m sitting here waiting for 7:30 to try and secure my spot.

Wish me luck. I’ll let you know how it goes!
